Only 8% of original old-growth forest exists in the Pacific Northwest. These old-growth forests house many unique species found only in this habitat. When old-growth forests are cut down, population densities of these species decline. Clear cutting in particular has been shown to affect the biodiversity of soils, making them less productive and increasing erosion.
