| The Atlantis is towing a deep-tow side-scan sonar, which here is at a depth of about 2300 meters (about 70 meters above the ocean floor). The sonar sends sound waves out and receives the signal back, basically an echo. In this case the sonar is looking mostly sideways so that we get good resolution of the vertical features rather than downward. Our goal is to produce a detailed map of about 10 kilometers of the median valley. (Ed Mathez, American Museum of Natural History) |
