When lava erupts under water, rounded forms called pillow lava are created like these pillow basalts photographed at the East Pacific Rise at 9o50' N. The lines or striations observed on the pillows are called tooth-paste striations because the lava oozes out to create these forms much like toothpaste oozes out of a tube when the tube is squeezed.
