The John P. Tully is a Canadian Coast Guard Vessel and will be the recovery ship for the sulfide structures. The Tully has a heavy-duty winch, borrowed from the U.S. Navy, that will be used for raising the approximately 4-ton sulfide structure. The vessel has a laboratory on board although it is smaller than the laboratory of the Thompson. The expedition's engineering crew will be aboard the Tully. Once the sulfide structures are safely on board, scientific sampling of the structures will begin. The ship will return to Port Angeles while the Thompson sets the equipment and probes for monitoring the effect of the recovery on the ocean floor. The Tully also includes a full gym, sauna, and rumor has it, a hot tub. Dinners aboard the ship are semi-formal. The ship's officers will dine with the scientists. This second recovery expedition is a two-ship operation. The scientists and crew members will be shuttling by boat aboard the Zodiac between the Tully and the Thompson.
