Bio means "life" and diversity means "variety".
Biodiversity means "variety of life". Earth's rich
variety of life makes our world unique in the universe.

Variety of genes
Poodles, beagles, and golden retrievers are all dogs -- but they're all different! A dog's genes -- tiny structures inside its cells -- detemine how a dog turns out. And, thanks to genes, dogs aren't at all like dogwood trees! Differences in genes fill our world with a wide variety of life.
Variety in species
Scientists group living things into many different kinds of species. For example, pansies, pill bugs, and people are different species. So far, scientists have identified about 1.75 million species. But that's just a start. Scientists think the final count will be somewhere between 3 million and 100 million! WOW!
Variety of
ecosystems

Desert. Forest. Swamp. Prairie. Ocean. Earth has many kinds of ecosystems. And every ecosystem has unique species. The plants and animals in an ecosystem depend on it to survive. When an ecosystem is healthy, its plants and animals are usually healthy too. But if any ecosystem is harmed, its species also suffer.
