Online Field Journal

Welcome to the American Museum of Natural History's "Online Field Journal" web site! Here, young children can explore the wonders of nature with a parent, grandparent, older brother or sister, or an adult friend.

Together, family members can use these online resources to:

  • observe and describe various plants and animals -- from leaves to reptiles to butterflies (Compare!)

  • draw from close observation a range of plants and animals in their community (Field Journals)

  • create 3-D paper models of real exhibits at the American Museum of Natural History (Dioramas)

Tips for Adult Helpers
Each area has a "Tips for Adult Helpers" section. This section features instructions to help children get the most out of each activity. It also suggests some open-ended questions to ask your child.
