Global Weekends: The African-American Musical Mosaic featuring DMC

Gospel, jazz, blues, rhythm and blues, soul music, and hip-hop are the result of an ever-evolving African-American musical journey that has produced unique musical forms and traditions. The Museum will celebrate this legacy on Saturday, February 18, with the Global Weekends program The African-American Musical Mosaic, which will include performances by the Harlem Quartet, First Corinthian Baptist Church Choir, Charles Mack, Sandra Reaves-Phillips, and a special collaboration between Darryl “DMC” McDaniels of the hip-hop group Run-DMC and the IMPACT Repertory Theatre choir. In this video, DMC shares what performing at the Museum’s event means to him.

Inside View: Beyond Planet Earth

The Museum’s new exhibition Beyond Planet Earth: The Future of Space Exploration boldly examines humanity’s next steps in our solar system and beyond. In this video, Museum scientists Neil de Grasse Tyson, Michael Shara, Ben Oppenheimer, and Denton Ebel discuss their work, how their research contributes to the exploration of space, and what inspires them as they think about the future of their field.

Now Showing on IMAX: Born To Be Wild

Travel through the forests of Borneo and the savannas of Kenya at the Museum’s Samuel J. and Ethel LeFrak Theater to see how human rescuers return orphaned orangutans and elephants to their natural homes in Born To Be Wild. Narrated by Morgan Freeman, this IMAX adventure reveals the powerful bond between humans and animals.

Curator Melanie Stiassny’s TEDx Talk: Learning To See Like A Congo River Fish

For the past decade, ichthyologist Melanie Stiassny has been conducting research on the freshwater fishes of the Congo River, where her team has made fascinating discoveries.  In this TEDx talk from last June, Stiassny discusses how one such discovery–a species of fish with no eyes and no pigment–inspired a new research direction.
