Myths and misconceptions about remote sensing

There is no doubt that satellite remote sensing has greatly improved our ability to conduct land cover mapping. There are limitations, however, and these are often understated or overlooked in the professional literature. The following statements are based on some common misconceptions related to using remote sensing for land cover mapping. The list is based on the author's firsthand experience, remote sensing literature, and presentations on remote sensing over the last 20 years. This list is meant primarily to alert new and inexperienced users of satellite image products to some of their limitations.
