Internships

CBC intern Linda Hammerton, Bahamas.

Katherine Holmes

The Center for Biodiversity and Conservation offers exciting learning opportunities through internships. Working closely with our staff on a wide range of projects relating to conservation biology, interns delve into current topics in conservation, learn research and communication skills, and become acquainted with the management and administration of conservation programs.

Past interns have represented diverse backgrounds, coming as far away as Bangladesh, and have participated in projects including molecular studies of marine invertebrate dispersal and speciation, a review of large-scale marine reserve design conservation projects, biodiversity outreach, development of conservation biology curriculum materials, compilation of New York City area and Bolivia invertebrate identification guides, and web development and design.

For example, Ballington Kinlock worked with the CBC with support from a supplemental Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). With mentoring by CBC Marine Biodiversity Specialist Kate Holmes, Ballington gained experience extracting DNA, running polymerase chain reactions (PCRs), and sequencing DNA from tissue samples collected as part of the Bahamas Biocomplexity Project.
