Power Trip Power Trip

Paul Devlin. 2003. 86 min. 35mm. (U.S./Republic of Georgia) The recent blackout that afflicted the United States and Canada seems trivial compared with the daily challenge of generating electricity in the Republic of Georgia. Following the post-Soviet transition to democracy, capitalism, and privatization, the local electric company in the capital city of Tbilisi was purchased by an American multinational corporation. This film follows a group of businessmen as they take on the seemingly impossible task of providing a consistent source of power to an impoverished and resistant populace unable to pay the soaring costs of electricity and unused to the uncertainties of a newly free market.
