In Search of Lucy Doe *
(1996. 50 min.) Lucy Doe is a member of a singular world - she is deaf and does not have a formal system of language; she communicates through vibrant gestures and vivid re-enactments. Oliver Sacks and leading interpreters visit both with Lucy Doe and with three brothers who have also developed a "home sign" system in contrast to their other siblings, who are learning American Sign Language. This riveting video shatters notions about how we define "language."
Roundtable discussion with interpreter Susan Schaller, featured in the video and guests follows the screening.
*This program will be spoken and signed; video is open captioned.

Tuesday, May 25
6:30-8:30 p.m. Program ED99219L
Poison In Paradise
(1996. 50 min.) Dr. Sacks and neurologist John Steele attempt to unravel the mystery of Guam Disease, which has had a dramatic effect on the population of that Pacific island. What causes this devastating illness, which produces symptoms like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's Diseases? Is it the water supply? Is it the soil? Or could it be Dr. Sacks' favorite plant, the seemingly benign Cycad? Discussion with Dr. Sacks follows the screening.
