Research Interests

Dr. Fiege is an experimental petrologist and geochemist applying his research to volcanology, economic geology and material science. He is the electron micro-probe and FT-IR laboratory manager at the AMNH.

In his research he focuses on volatile and metal transport, redox processes, magma degassing, magma-magma interaction and (stable) isotope fractionation in magmatic-hydrothermal systems, both on Earth and in extraterrestrial environments. One goal of Dr. Fiege’s research is to elucidate the spatial, temporal, and geochemical relationship between magmatic/volcanic activity and mineral ore deposits formation. Evaluating the contribution and importance of kinetic versus equilibrium processes can provide fundamental insights to unravel the bigger picture. To approach his research goals, Dr. Fiege combines various state-of-the-art analytical techniques (e.g., SIMS, µ-XANES, EMPA, LA-ICP-MS, Raman, SEM and FT-IR) with experiments (e.g., IHPV, CSPV, Piston Cylinder).

  •     Iron XANES

X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy at Fe k-edge is a method used, for instance, to quantify the Fe oxidation states in silicate glasses at high precision. A mount containing 10 felsic references glasses used for calibrations published by Dr. Fiege 1 is available for loan upon request.
