Ed Mathez came to the Museum as a curator in 1987. In 1993, he began his present role as Chairman, Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences. Ed leads the scientific team in the development of the Gottesman Hall of Planet Earth.
His research interests include behavior of volatiles (liquids that turn to vapor) in magmatic systems and the deep Earth; crystallization mechanisms of large mafic igneous intrusions; geochemistry of platinum group elements and formation of platinum deposits; the geochemistry of carbon; and the chemistry of mineral surfaces.
