Conserving Chameleons
Madagascar
Madagascar is incredibly unique biologically. Roughly 80 percent of its plant and vertebrate species are found nowhere else in the world.
The island has more than 70 endemic chameleon species alone.
AMNH scientists have combined computer models with satellite imagery to predict which unsurveyed areas are likely habitat for chameleons.
With the help of these data, researchers have discovered seven new chameleon species.
Such models help conservationists zero in on the most urgent areas for protection.
Still, only 10 percent of Madagascar’s forests remain, making it difficult for many species to survive.
