Co-op America: Promoting an Environmentally Responsive Economy

Co-op America is a national, member-supported, nonprofit organization that is working to create an economically and environmentally sustainable society. It conducts research and promotes public debate on the need for an American economy based on the complementary principles of environmental sustainability and social responsibility. As the U.S. enters the 21st century, Co-op America believes that our future ecological and economic stability will be increasingly determined by the everyday interactions of consumers and businesses.

This organization was established in 1982 and currently has 2,400 participating business members and more than 50,000 individual members. Its activities are directed at both the consumption side of the economy, by creating demand for products produced or grown in environmentally sensitive ways, and the production side, by promoting the reliable supply of these goods and services. All member businesses have passed rigorous screening that assesses their environmental practices.
