Co-op America: Promoting an Environmentally Responsive Economy

Co-op America's goals are twofold: to encourage people to examine their consumption habits and consider how their everyday purchasing power can be an effective tool in creating an environmentally sound economy, and to promote socially and ecologically responsible business practices. One of its central programs is the annual publication of the National Green Pages, which informs consumers how to locate "green" products and businesses.

Recent studies have shown an increase in the number of U.S. citizens who identify themselves as being environmentally committed and who act on their convictions -- between 8 and 10 million people. An even larger group believes that environmental degradation is a major problem, but they are not sure what to do about it. These people number between 40 and 50 million. Together, they represent nearly one-fourth of the U.S. population who believes that the economy exerts a significant influence on our country's ecological health.
