Tanzania Environmental Education Program
In 1991, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF-UK) began developing the Tanzania Environmental Education Program (TEEP), whose aim was to improve public awareness of environmental issues. WWF worked closely with Tanzanian environmental and education agencies to identify the goals and priorities of the new program. Following this exploratory period, efforts were focused on professional and occupational training, primary school education, and community education. To promote the capacity of Tanzanian organizations to develop and deliver environmental education programs, individuals from a range of institutions received professional training. They were drawn from the Ministry of Education and Culture, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, the National Environment Management Council, and the media, among others. This core group of educators are now trainers at their respective institutions. To spread environmental education to primary schools, awareness workshops were held for school inspectors, teacher trainers, curriculum developers, and teachers. TEEP has developed education materials and disseminated them to primary schools all over the country. |
