There were as many, and probably even more, species losses in South America at the same time. Other parts of the world also suffered major losses, but at different times and in different places.

This doesn’t qualify as a mass extinction since it primarily affected mammals (though birds and, to a lesser extent, reptiles were also affected). Nonetheless, these late Quaternary events remain the subject of a particularly intense scientific debate.
