* Mammoths figure significantly into primitive art. Early European cave-dwellers realistically carved and painted mammoths on the walls of their homes, providing a vivid portrait of these awesome creatures and the way they interacted with humans. For example, these illustrations tell us that mammoths were hunted by man and that they had a hump-like reserve of fat on their upper backs.
From these rich records, scientists have been able to extrapolate a remarkably complete picture of the mammoth’s appearance and behavior.
