Species or Group: Haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus)
Notes: Historically, haddock and other groundfish were unwanted incidental catches in the once abundant and lucrative cod fisheries of New England. Now that cod is so scarce, these previously unmarketable fish have become the target of the groundfish fleet.
Status: Poor. Haddock are severely depleted, but they may be showing some signs of rebuilding under severe fishing restrictions.
Management Adequacy: Better managed now than several years ago. Certain critical areas are now closed to fishing, allowing the fish to recover if given enough time.
By-Kill and Other Considerations: High. By-kill of other species is a major consideration, as haddock are taken with otter trawls, gillnets, and longlines, from waters off New England south to North Carolina.
Overall Recommendation: At the yellow-red interface.
