1994: The Quota Inches Up

Under pressure from the shark fishing industry, federal quotas on large coastal sharks were increased, though only by 5%. The limit was held at that level pending further stock assessments.

1996: The Numbers Aren’t So Good

A Shark Evaluation Workshop conducted by the National Marine Fisheries Service evaluated large coastal shark populations. It showed that the rapid decline of the 1980s had slowed, but that the number of large coastal sharks had not increased. The report recommended further limiting the shark catch to make recovery possible.
