New Satellites-A Quantum Leap Forward
This year NASA will launch the first of a series of satellites called the Earth Observing System (EOS), a long-term coordinated research effort to study the Earth as a global environment. Just as the citizens saw Paris in an entirely new way from the top of the newly-built Eiffel Tower (no one had ever seen a city from above before), EOS will revolutionize our view of Earth.

The flagship of the program is the Earth Observation Spacecraft AM-1, which will look at how Earth's air, land, water and life forms interact to affect global climate. Equipment unmatched in any other earth-observing satellite will gather data in weeks that used to take months to amass, even years.
