The Amazon basin contains three to four million square kilometers of rain forest. Detailed Landsat images show that this forest is being cleared at the rate of about a quarter of a million square kilometers per decade.

Watch the Radical Transformation of a Bolivian Rain Forest
Landsat satellites have been photographing this area for fifteen years. This dramatic time-lapse sequence documents the transformation of a section of pristine rain forest. Virgin forest appears dark red, fading to pale blue or white as larger and larger areas are cut down to make way for soybean plantations.
