A glossary:
Extinct--no longer existing in living form; extinction is the eradication of an entire species
Endangered--at significant risk of extinction
Extirpated--locally eliminated from an ecosystem; extirpation is the total elimination of a regional population of a species
Native--occurring or living naturally in an area; indigenous
Endemic--not only native to a region but occurring nowhere else
Alien--living outside of its natural geographic range; alien species are also referred to as exotic, introduced, nonnative, nonindigenous, or invasive species
