A glossary: • Extinct--no longer existing in living form; extinction is the eradication of an entire species • Endangered--at significant risk of extinction • Extirpated--locally eliminated from an ecosystem; extirpation is the total elimination of a regional population of a species • Native--occurring or living naturally in an area; indigenous • Endemic--not only native to a region but occurring nowhere else • Alien--living outside of its natural geographic range; alien species are also referred to as exotic, introduced, nonnative, nonindigenous, or invasive species
