(Climate Change / Alaska) Temperature increases in the northern high latitudes over the past few decades have led to a wide variety of ecosystem changes, including modification of plant productivity, ecosystem respiration, and fire and insect disturbance. These, in turn, feedback to the physical climate system through changes in albedo and associated surface energy fluxes, with global implications. Scientists are trying to better quantify these changes and their impacts on the ecosystem through the use of satellite remote sensing, biophysical models and field measurements. |

Zircons: Window on Earth’s Youth
Today, the big story of our planet’s formation is being deduced from the tiniest clues. Zircons, microscopic mineral deposits found in rocks all over the world, have survived since these ancient times – some for nearly 4.3 billion years. In this Earth Bulletin feature, we’ll follow the scientists as they race to find these relics and decipher the information they hold. Using state-of-the-art chemical and physical analyses, they are uncovering the conditions under which these tiny objects formed: the conditions of the Earth’s first stages. |

Dark Energy Dark energy is a hypothetical form of energy that permeates spaces and is forcing an accelerating rate of expansion of the Universe. Though scientists have yet to determine the nature of this mmysterious stuff, calculations suggest it accounts for 74% of the total mass-energy of the Universe. What is it? How do we know it's there? We'll travel to Lick Observatory, where scientists are using supernovae observations to untangle the history of dark energy's effect on the Universe. |

HPV: The Natural History of a Virus and the Promise of a New Vaccine
Cancer, the second leading cause of death in the US today, is projected to become the #1 killer worldwide by 2010. As much as one-fifth of all cancers are caused by viruses – some that we encounter every day. If we fail to develop a comprehensive understanding of how these viruses work, we may soon be faced with a cancer pandemic. Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are a diverse family of DNA viruses that commonly infect the skin and mucosal membranes of humans. This Human Bulletin feature will follow the latest investigations into HPV, dispelling myths about treatment and offering insight into how viral-mediated cancers work. |
