DIGITAL UNIVERSE

For Full-Dome Digital Planetariums

Our 3-D atlas of the observed Milky Way, assembled at AMNH and the Hayden Planetarium, allows you to fly among the stars of our solar neighborhood and out to the galaxies surrounding our Milky Way. The spatial distribution of coregistered data sets reveals the structure of our galaxy intuitively. Most data are 3-D – nearby stars, nebulae, and globular clusters, for example – but we also include Earth-centered all-sky surveys in many wavelengths. The Digital Universe will grow to incorporate even more data, extending out to the edge of the observable universe

“If that vast collection of data [at the National Virtual Observatory] is like a library of poetry for astronomers, the [Digital] Universe tour turns it into a funky, urban spoken-word event.”
