Visualizing the Ocean Depths: Exploring NYC’s Hudson Canyon (9th-12th)
Many New Yorkers don’t know that right off of our coast, we have an underwater canyon comparable in size to the Grand Canyon. The ocean is truly Earth’s final frontier– we have better maps of the surface of Mars than the seafloor -. Bathymetric data (information about the depth and underwater features of the ocean) is the key to unlocking the secrets of our planet’s oceans. In this course, students will utilize cutting edge mapping technologies to investigate the Hudson Canyon - the largest submarine canyon on the US Atlantic Coast and one of Earth’s most extreme environments - and explore the rich biodiversity that inhabits it. Students will learn about conservation efforts by researchers at AMNH and the NY Aquarium, and develop proposals to support their efforts in creating a new national marine sanctuary to protect our unique local ecosystem.

Health, Illness, and Medicine Around the World: A cross-cultural perspective (9th-12th)
Health, illness, and medicine are topics that have been top of mind for people the world over the past several years. In this course, students will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of illness and medicine from a cultural perspective. What is a “sickness”? Why do different cultural groups come up with different etiologies and treatments for afflictions that are, biologically, the same? Or, are they the same? In Medical Anthropology, students will explore how different cultures conceive of anatomy, the unique botanical, spiritual, and social approaches different groups take towards healing, and the many ways health and illness impact all aspects of society and vice versa as we craft a nuanced view of healthcare worldwide.
