Exhibition Text

Shrine (model) used in ceremonies to attract whales and to cause dead whales to wash ashore. Whaling shrines might contain images of dead whalers, skulls of distinguished Nuu-chah-nulth men, and sometimes corpses and symbols of whales. Shrines were owned by one man, the only person who knew the rituals. Lasting eight nights, the rituals were repeated during four waxing (growing) moons.
