5.3 HAIDA spoons hero

Exhibition Text

The Haida made spoons out of the horn of the mountain sheep (white) and mountain goat (black). The handles were beautifully carved to represent various supernatural beings, often enacting an episode from some myth. Most often depicted were the many adventures of the supernatural raven. Sometimes the carvings portrayed the owner’s “crests,” representations of animals or supernatural beings associated with his legendary ancestors.
