Basketry and Matting

Part of Northwest Coast Hall.

Collection Information

Baskets were made of cedar withes or cedarbark and mats, of cedarbark. Displayed here are mats, bags, and some of the tools used to make them. Bark beaters were used to pound the cedarbark to separate the finer inner layers from the courser outer ones. Bark shredders were used to soften and sever the fibers for use as towels, infant bedding, and other purposes.
