Halibut Fishing

Part of Northwest Coast Hall.

From the Kwakwaka'wakw people of British Columbia, Canada, hooks for halibut fishing, a rope, and other fishing tools.

The implements used for halibut fishing are displayed in this panel. Halibut were caught by a technique called bottom fishing in which hooks were suspended in series close to the bottom of the sea. The hooked halibut were hauled in canoes and killed with clubs.
