Tools and Manufactures

Part of Northwest Coast Hall.

The display of Nuu-chah-nulth implements emphasizes the importance of the cedar tree as a source of raw material and the sea as a source of food. On the left are a number of cedarbark bags: the one at the top is a drag for a whaling harpoon. The two mats are woven from cedarbark. Harpoons and hooks for fishing are shown at lower left. The adzes, awls, needles, carving tools, and bark softeners on the shelf were all used in cedarbark and woodwork. The baskets are woven of cedar root.
