Fishing main content.

Part of Northwest Coast Hall.

Fishing provided the basic food of the Nuxalk. Salmon ranked first, followed by olachen and halibut. Salmon were caught in nets or traps where they were harpooned, olachen were taken in nets, and halibut were caught with the specially shaped halibut hook used by all the Northwest Coast tribes. Salmon and halibut were smoked and eaten throughout the year. Olachen were valued only for the oil which was rendered by allowing the fish to rot for a few days and then boiling them. Olachen oil was stored and used as a relish with other foods.
