Carvings main content.

Part of Northwest Coast Hall.

The Tlingit carved in wood, bone, horn, and ivory. Most of the ivory was obtained in trade from the Eskimo. The carvings usually depict various supernatural beings in animal form. Some of the objects displayed here are shamans’ charms representing the supernatural beings which are the source of the shamans’ power. Shamans are individuals who control supernatural power which they use chiefly to cure disease.
