Director in Attendance: Ruth Beckermann
2024 | 118 min | Austria
At a crowded primary school in Favoriten, a working-class Vienna neighborhood, teachers struggle with growing class sizes. Director Ruth Beckermann quietly observes as students—many of them recent immigrants from Syria—grapple with religion and identity in a new country. Using iPhones, they interview each other, posing questions about culture in an unfamiliar context. Despite living through constant upheaval, they learn, adapt, and form identities, while Beckermann captures their journey of resilience and belonging in Austria.
