Installations and interactive events around the Museum complement the extraordinary slate of films and serve to further illuminate the many cultures celebrated at this year’s Margaret Mead Film Festival.

Masks of Bali

Thursday, October 13 - Sunday, October 16 | Festival Hours | Grand Gallery

Three recently acquired Balinese masks highlight contemporary work from the South Pacific, a region to which anthropologist Margaret Mead dedicated so much of her groundbreaking work. One of the pieces is a Rangda mask, a style of mask featured in the iconic ethnographic film Trance and Dance in Bali that was released in 1952 from footage shot by Mead and her husband Gregory Bateson in the 1930s. An excerpt from the film plays alongside this exhibit.

Aue Away: An Installation

Thursday, October 13 - Sunday, October 16 | Festival Hours | Grand Gallery

Early in her career at the Museum, Mead introduced readers to the value of careful observation in the field with her book Coming of Age in Samoa. At this 40th festival, we are especially thrilled to showcase Samoan artist Dan Taulapapa McMullin, who brings forward questions of memory, relationships, and storytelling in the context of how we perceive other cultures. The title word Aue (pronounced “Away”) signifies an emotional reaction, and, in this work, Taulapapa juxtaposes elements that evoke his childhood memories of Samoa with Western stereotypes in cartoon images of tiki kitsch—contrasts and connections that invite a new understanding of stories representing this part of the world.

The Margaret Mead Filmmaker Award winner will be announced Sunday evening. The Mead Award recognizes documentary filmmakers who embody the spirit, energy, and innovation demonstrated by Mead in her research, fieldwork, films, and writings.

Following the ceremony, enjoy a special screening of the virtual-reality film History of Cuban Dance and, in anticipation of the Museum’s upcoming exhibition about Cuba, break out your salsa shoes and join a dance party with instructors from Salsa Salsa Dance Studio, featuring music by Cuban-American hip-hop and Latin-beat artist DJ Broadway. The evening will conclude with an encore presentation of the Award-winning film.
