Some 10,000 feet above sea level in the mountains of Kyrgyzstan, a large stone block bearing the scrawled word “welcome” sits amid the emptiness. The block is the only place with cellular reception for many miles. Encounter a diverse crew of locals—from boys on donkeys to men in vans—on a familiar quest for connection in the most remote of settings.

Activate: My Perspective

“I like the idea of microcosm vs. macrocosm and simplicity vs. complexity. My film should show the audience that with a simple concept focused on a minimal space with only one angle you can derive a wider picture—a macrocosm—in our case, the Kyrgyz culture and lifestyle. Less is sometimes more. In me it has activated a similar principle: it inspires me to shoot more short movies following the same pattern of microcosm/macrocosm. Ideally, I’d end up with an ethnographic series of various Kyrgyz microcosms. Further, it hopefully will make the Central Asian region more known amongst the rest of the world.”
