She Sees Sea Turtles on the Seashore

The Issue: Instead of being guided by moonlight to the safety of the ocean, sea turtle hatchlings are getting distracted by all the light pollution. When they're lost, they can get run over by cars or starve.

[NEWS JINGLE]

 

>>HOPE: My name is Hope from Hands and Nature United News. I’m here to explain to you what

happens when baby sea turtles get distracted by the lights of the city when they should be heading out to sea.

 

[CAR ENGINE RUMBLES]

 

>>DRIVER: Aw, baby turtles! They’re so cute!

 

>>NARRATOR: Mother sea turtles lay their eggs on the beach. The babies hatch at night and they’re supposed to go into the water. The Moon reflects on the water, guiding them to the ocean.

 

>>DRIVER: Let me take some pictures. It’s so dark out, I need to turn my flash on!

[PHOTO SHOOTER CLICKS]

 

>>BOY: Hey! You shouldn’t do that. You’re distracting the sea turtles from their journey to the ocean. If they go towards you, they will go towards the city, they’ll end up in the city. They could get run over or starve!

 

>>DRIVER: Oh, I didn’t know that! I’m so sorry. I’ll just carry my car home. 

 

>>NARRATOR: Now, the baby sea turtles won’t be distracted by the lights and will go straight towards the ocean. 

 

>>HOPE: That’s how this amazing story concluded. We can help by turning off lights 

when sea turtles are hatching and don’t disturb them by touching them or taking pictures.

Favorite place or object in the Museum: Planetarium

What you like most about science: I like plants and animals, and planets and stars.

Advice to kids who think science is boring: I think that you have not found the right subject. Science is everything! I used to not like science, but now I do because I found out all about the solar system!

Advice to kids who think science is boring: Science is about practically everything, from astronomy to zoology. Think of something that you like and chances are, you can connect it to science somehow.

Hudson

Hudson | Age 10

Favorite plant or animal: Cat

Favorite book: The Spy School series

Favorite ice cream flavor: Strawberry

Favorite thing to do / hobby: Rubik's cubes

Favorite place or object in the Museum: Rocks and minerals

What you like most about science: All of the experiments and projects that you can do.

Advice to kids who think science is boring: Ask more questions, and think about how science is applied in your everyday lives.
