OLOGY CARD 050
Series: Place

Earth

The Earth is our home. So far, it's the only place that we know of that has life. Everywhere you look on Earth there is life. This is possible because Earth has lots of water. It's also just the right distance from the Sun. Some people call Earth the "Goldilocks planet." It's not too hot (like Venus), and not too cold (like Mars), it's just right!

Moons: 1
Diameter: 7,900 miles
Location: 3rd planet from the Sun
Average Surface Temperature: 59 degrees
Average Distance from Sun: 93 million miles
Characteristics: the only known planet with living organisms, water, and an oxygen-rich atmosphere
Significance: It's the perfect place for life to thrive.

Oceans on Earth help control:

population

earthquakes

temperature

Correct!

Most of our planet is covered by ocean. In fact, oceans cover over 75 percent of the Earth's surface. Oceans help spread warmth from hot to cold climates.

A lunar eclipse happens when:

Earth gets in between the Moon and the Sun

a dark storm cloud passes in front of the Moon

the Sun stops shining for one hour

Correct!

During a lunar eclipse, Earth gets between the Moon and the Sun. When this happens, the Earth casts a shadow on the Moon. A lunar eclipse only happens when the Moon is full.

The Earth's surface is dynamic, which means that it is a really great place to live.

?

Fiction

The Earth is dynamic. It is always changing. The Earth's plates are always on the move. In fact, the Earth under your feet is moving almost as fast as your fingernails grow!

“

Most of Earth's volcanoes are underwater where nobody can see them! A chain of volcanoes nearly 70,000 kilometers (43,500 miles) long circles through the Earth's oceans like seams in a baseball.
