Fourteen technicians wearing cleanroom suits stand beneath the James Webb Space Telescope. Once launched into space, the James Webb Space telescope’s 18-segmented gold mirror is specially designed to capture infrared light from the first galaxies that formed in the early Universe, and will help the telescope peer inside dust clouds where stars and planetary systems are forming today.

What is the most complex space telescope ever built all about?

Join Museum astrophysicist Jackie Faherty and Director of Astrovisualization Carter Emmart for this special look at the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Expected to launch in late December, NASA’s JWST will become the most powerful tool for observing the universe available to scientists.

Find out about the telescope’s orbit and its placement over one million miles away from Earth and tour the exciting sites it will focus on during its first year of operation.
