The deep ocean floor may seem like one of the least hospitable environments for living things, yet despite dizzying depths and near-total darkness, some life thrives in these extremes.
Organisms that live near super-hot hydrothermal vents have been well-documented, but Jason Sylvan from the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) researches even more mysterious sea dwellers: microscopic organisms that eat minerals on “dead” vents.
Invisible to the eye, these tiny microbes teach us about how life can adapt in the unlikeliest of places, what’s at work under the ocean floor, and how little we know about a large part of our own planet.
SciChats are free hangouts open to 10–13 year-olds accompanied by a guardian. This is a chance to socialize, eat, and hangout with scientists and other curious kids.
