“How One Snake Becomes 100: Identifying and Describing New Species in Madagascar

Saturday, April 7th, 2018
Sessions at 2:15 pm, 3:00 pm, and 3:45 pm

A young woman in a black shirt holds up a small, brown snake for examination.

Roughly 30 million years ago, the first advanced snake found its way from mainland Africa to the island of Madagascar. Over the millennia that followed, this single species gave rise to an incredible array of creatures found nowhere else on earth. Although the majority of snakes inhabiting Madagascar share a common ancestor, they have evolved radically different appearances, hunting techniques, and survival strategies. Come learn about Arianna’s expeditions through unsurveyed forests, limestone caves, and isolated mountaintops in search of new species, and find out how she uses snake DNA to determine how these incredible animals came to be and what must be done to protect them.

Meet the Scientist programs are for visitors 7 years old and older.
