Brown Scholars Frequently Asked Questions and Submission Guidelines


Q: Who is the Brown Scholars program for?
A: The following scenarios:
- If you are an 8th grade girl*, you can ONLY apply for the School Year Session if you will be starting 9th grade before the start of the session.
- If you are a 9th grade girl*, you can apply and be considered for the Summer OR School Year Sessions (you will only do one of the sessions).
- If you are a 10th grade girl*, you can ONLY apply for the Summer Session.
We are unable to make exceptions to the grade requirements above.

Q: How do I submit an application to the Brown Scholars program?
A: As part of the application process you will have to complete an online application ( and a recent official transcript/report card and provide an optional recommendation letter. The recommendation letter and official transcript/report card can be uploaded at the end of the online application or emailed to If you have a copy of your scores from the 8th grade NY State ELA and Math Exams, please submit a copy as well.

Q: When is the application deadline?
A: The online application, recommendation letter, and official transcript/report card must be submitted by April 15th at 11:59 p.m. (The application is now closed, please check back at the end of January 2019)

 *If you self-identify as a girl, you are welcome to apply.

Submission Guidelines

Official Transcript/Report Card: As part of your application you must submit a copy of your most recent transcript or report card. If you do not know where to obtain any of these documents, please ask your parent, a teacher, or other school staff member to assist you. We recommend before you start completing the application. Recommendation Letter (optional): Your letter of recommendation should come from a current or former teacher, or another adult who knows you, such as someone from your youth program, after-school program, or workplace. Your letter of recommendation should not come from a parent or family member. The recommendation letter should include how does the person writing the letter knows you and for how long. It should also speak to your creativity, sense of humor, motivation, initiative, collaboration skills, work habits, group participation, potential for growth, etc. The recommendation letter can be uploaded at the end of the online application or emailed to We recommend asking for the recommendation letter and requesting a copy of your transcript/report card before you start completing the online application.

Short Answer Questions: We highly recommend reading the questions below, composing your response in a text editor, then pasting it into the space provided in the application.
Questions 1 - 4 requires a 1 paragraph answer (each answer should be between 150-200 words).

  1. How do you think your enrollment in the Brown Scholars program would be of benefit to you?
  2. What science interests you and what do you like about that subject?
  3. Tell us about a memorable experience you’ve had with technology, coding, engineering or robotics. The experience could have taken place in school or outside of school. In particular, we want to hear what you liked or disliked about it, what was challenging, what was exciting, etc.
  4. What do you think about working with other students for group projects? What do you like about it? What do you find difficult? What are some useful strategies you use when working with other people?
  5. Imagine you’ve been working on a math problem for quite some time only to discover your answer is not quite right. List 3 things you would do in order to find the correct solution.
  6. List your 3 greatest strengths or things you think you do well and 3 things you think you could do better if you had someone to help you.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Students who are accepted to the Brown Scholars program are NOT eligible to apply for After School Program Research Courses (which are prerequisites for the Science Research Mentoring Program). You are, however, eligible to apply for ASP Exploratory courses.
