Lessons from the Dead: Exploring the Field of Bioarchaeology

Saturday, October 7th, 2017

Sessions at 2:15 pm, 3:00 pm, and 3:45 pm

Molly Kaplan doing fieldwork, digging for remains

Bioarchaeology is the study of burials and human remains in archaeological contexts. Through the study of ancient mummies in Egypt and Peru, to Richard III, to native peoples all across the globe, bioarchaeologists seek to understand the life and death of individuals from the past, and shed light on the broader themes of culture and human behavior. Archaeologist Molly Kaplan of the Argentine Forensic Anthropology Team has excavated burials all around the world. She is fascinated by what human remains can teach us about health, migration, religion, and social interaction. Join us as Molly discusses the methods of archaeological excavation and analysis, while exploring the profound ways that studying the dead can teach us about the living—including ourselves!

Meet the Scientist programs are for visitors 7 years old and older.
