This course is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Debra Tillinger.

Debra was a passionate educator with a knack for explaining difficult concepts in simple terms. She studied ocean and climate physics at Columbia University and researched the effects of declining sea ice on the global climate. She taught at Marymount College and at the American Museum of Natural History and, as “Dr. Mermaid”, used the arts to teach science in her own uniquely colorful way.

Debra was a key member of the team that oversaw the recent revision of this course. She worked with other scientists and with the development team to ensure that the science was both accurate and effectively conveyed. Her knowledge and creativity have infused virtually all aspects of the course, adding to a powerful legacy for students past, present and future.
