In 2000 Jean and his wife retired from Lester B Pearson College of the Pacific, a United World College, on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. At the college Jean was an International Baccalaureate (IB) Physics teacher, a post he held for 27 years. Prior to that, Jean taught at The United World College of the Atlantic in Wales, UK. These two colleges being international schools, he was able to work with students from various backgrounds as well as with faculty from all around the world. Along with these duties, Jean was also an assistant examiner for the IB and a Teacher Training Workshop leader for IB North America (IBNA).

Since his retirement from active teaching, Jean has kept ties with the IB, remaining an assistant examiner and a principal examiner. He has also continued as an on-line workshop developer and facilitator for the IB Professional Development program.

Jean moved from the rain forest of British Columbia's west coast to a semi-arid area of the BC interior, the Okanagan, a region of vineyards and orchards. He and his wife live on the side of a mountain, overlooking a lake and a small town below. As an amateur astronomer, he enjoys the dry air and the many clear nights. Jean has a small observatory (with a dome) on his property, where he spends many nights of good observing. He and his wife also enjoy landscaping and gardening on their ten-acre property. Being quite high above the valley floor, they have ever changing skies and beautiful vistas of rolling clouds and brilliant sunrises and sunsets.
