John Russell

John Russell is a Senior Education Researcher at Math for America, where he supports research-practice partnerships that bolster MƒA’s efforts to encourage its model nationally. In particular, John’s research focuses on supporting teacher communities of practice and the work of STEM teacher leaders.

Prior to MƒA, John taught science for ten years in New York City, primarily at Columbia Secondary School for Math, Science, and Engineering. He most recently taught middle school Earth Science, as well as College Geology to 12th graders, through SUNY's Earth Science Outreach Program. He is the recipient of AGI's Ed Roy, Jr. Award for Excellence in K-8 Earth Science Teaching, NAGT's Outstanding Earth Science Teacher award for the Eastern Section, and has been nominated for ASTE’s award for science teacher education. John has long been involved with providing learning opportunities for teachers, working with Teach For America, Relay Graduate School, and the American Museum of Natural History on programming for pre-service and master teachers. He is on the adjunct faculty for the American Museum of Natural History’s Master of Arts in Teaching program, and has spent time reviewing curriculum for the National Science Teachers Association. John holds an Ed.D. in Science Education from Teachers College at Columbia University.

In his free time, John can be found kayaking on the Hudson River.
