We are pleased to report that our Malagasy collaborators continue to advance conservation capacity development activities, a year after we officially concluded our MacArthur-supported projects in the country. They have created a new “association,” a type of NGO, and held their first general assembly in January.
The REPC Association has approved a three-year strategic plan and obtained a grant from the University of Berkeley to organize a national conference on reinforcing capacity for conservation. Their objectives for the conference are to establish themselves as a leading organization in that arena and catalyze activities to strengthen training and certification within Madagascar’s large network of protected areas. They are active in disseminating their work and representatives will be attending an international conference, Capacity Building for Conservation & Resource Management in Africa: An Exchange of Ideas, Opportunities & Best Practice, in Kenya this summer.
