Fun in the Sun

We Are Not Just All Research and Work

Here at the Southwestern Research Station guests are able to enjoy many hiking trails, clear skies, and a multitude of birding possibilities--all within a walking distance away. But did you know we provide many on-site activities, too? On our grounds guests can find a horseshoe pit, volleyball and basketball nets, a ping pong table, a 72 degree thermal-fed reservoir, and many board games.

Throughout the year, the communities of Portal, AZ and Rodeo, NM host an assortment of events. Outside the natural beauty of the two towns, there is almost no lack of entertainment: music nights, hiking trips, seminars, parades, regattas, and so much more! While at SWRS, you will notice posters and flyers detailing each upcoming event, and we encourage participation. In fact, the two communities have a shared web page where events are posted - sometimes months in advance.

The Station is even known to host a variety of public gatherings. These events include spring flings, involvement with July 4th celebrations, Halloween parties, Christmas dances, and New Year's celebrations. If you visit us during a certain time of year, you are welcome to join in our annual horseshoe, golf, and ping pong tournaments, too!

In a small town parade, a pickup truck with a banner across the hood with the letters S, W, R, S formed from images of a snake, a bat, ants, and a lizard. Revelers ride in the back.
