Imagine you are traveling on the ancient Silk Road . What music might you hear?

1. Click "START" to hear an ancient song. It's called "The Battle in the Water." It is from The White Snake, a popular Chinese fairytale about a snake-spirit who marries a young man. 

2. Click on an instrument to turn its sound on and off. These six traditional instruments are played by musicians in New York City's Chinese Theater Works. The instruments are similar to those from the ancient city of Xi'an, China.

3. As you listen, think about: 

• What does each instrument sound like?  

• What role does it play in the song (melody, harmony, rhythm)?
